The real reason you're stuck

Why most Spanish courses don't work.

You've probably tried at least two. Maybe three. You downloaded the app. You did a group class. You watched a Netflix show with subtitles. And yet — the moment a real person speaks to you, your mind goes blank. Here's why.

01

They teach for the test

Traditional courses are built around grammar exercises and vocabulary lists — the stuff you studied in school. That's great for passing an exam. It does not teach you to speak when someone actually talks to you.

02

Apps train streaks, not fluency

Duolingo keeps you engaged — that's what it's designed to do. But 10 minutes of tapping fruit names doesn't build the neural patterns your brain needs to produce sentences under pressure. You stay A1 for years.

03

Group classes move at the weakest pace

In a group of 12, the teacher teaches to the slowest student. You get 3 minutes of speaking per hour. That's 24 hours of actual speech after a year. Of course you don't feel fluent.

How we compare

See the difference side by side.

Every Spanish course promises fluency. Most don't deliver. Here's what we do differently — laid out honestly against the alternatives you're probably considering.

The Profe Fer Method

Three pillars. One path to fluency.

I've refined this system over 40 years of teaching English speakers to speak Spanish. It's built on how your brain actually acquires language — not on how a textbook is structured.

1

Pattern first, word second

I teach you the 40 sentence patterns that cover 90% of daily Spanish. Once you have the pattern, swapping words is trivial. This is the opposite of memorizing 2,000 flashcards — and it works 10× faster.

→ Covered in modules 1–12
2

Speak from day 1

Every module has speaking drills — out loud, from minute one. This is the non-negotiable that breaks the "understand but can't respond" curse. It's uncomfortable for 3 sessions, then it's automatic.

→ Built into every lesson
3

Subjunctive, without panic

The one tense that stops most English speakers. I teach it in 2 weeks using a trigger-based method — no rules to memorize, just patterns to recognize. After module 18, you'll stop fearing it.

→ Modules 16–22
The journey

From zero to speaking in 5 steps.

No guessing, no getting lost. Every student follows the same proven path — it just compresses or expands depending on where you start.

  1. 01

    Take the free diagnostic

6 questions, 3 minutes. We nail down your exact level (A1–B2) and your personal goal — travel, family, career, or personal challenge. No sign-up paywall.

    Day 0 · 3 min
  2. 02

    Get your personalized plan

Based on your level, I tell you exactly which modules to start with and which to skip. No wasted time on stuff you already know — you'll be on page 1 of Module 3, not Module 1.

    Day 1 · 10 min
  3. 03

    Watch · Speak · Practice

15–25 min per module. Video lesson → speaking drill out loud → workbook exercise → native quiz. Every module ends with you saying something you couldn't say before.

    Weeks 1–16
  4. 04

    Review & consolidate

Every 4 modules there's a built-in review. Spaced repetition is baked in — you're not going to forget this stuff. I make sure it sticks before we move on.

    Every 4 weeks
  5. 05

    Graduate into fluency

Module 33 is your exit — by then you're conversational at minimum, B2/C1 if you put in the work. You keep lifetime access to rewatch anything, anytime, forever.

The 33-module roadmap

Everything you get, in order.

Four phases, each one building on the last. Designed so you can jump in at any level — the diagnostic tells you exactly where to start.

Phase 1 · Weeks 1–3

Foundations that stick

The first 200 useful phrases. Pronunciation, greetings, numbers, gender, present tense. By week 3 you're ordering food, introducing yourself, and asking basic questions.

  • Introductions & pronunciation
  • Numbers, time, days of the week
  • Gender, articles, essential nouns
  • Present tense — regular verbs
  • Ser vs. Estar (without the confusion)
  • Basic questions & negatives
  • Colors, food, clothing
  • Ordering in restaurants & cafés
Phase 2 · Weeks 4–7

Making sentences flow

Connectors, past tenses, and the patterns that make you sound natural instead of translated. This is where most app learners get stuck forever — we break through it in a month.

  • Irregular verbs you'll actually use
  • Direct & indirect objects
  • Reflexive verbs (easier than it sounds)
  • Connectors: the "flow" patterns
  • Preterite — talking about yesterday
  • Imperfect — describing the past
  • Preterite vs. Imperfect — finally clear
  • Future tense & plans
Phase 3 · Weeks 8–11

Mastering the subjunctive

The tense that makes English speakers quit. My trigger-based method turns it from a nightmare into a pattern recognition exercise — you'll use it without thinking by week 10.

  • Commands & requests (imperative)
  • Intro to subjunctive — triggers
  • Subjunctive of doubt & emotion
  • Conditional tense — "would" in Spanish
  • Imperfect subjunctive — hypotheticals
  • If-clauses (si + past subjunctive)
  • Perfect tenses — "I have done..."
  • Reported speech
Phase 4 · Weeks 12–16

Cultural fluency & polish

Idioms, regional variants (Mexican vs. Spanish vs. Argentinian), advanced conversation, pronunciation refinement. This is the "now you sound like you've lived there" phase.

  • Idioms & colloquialisms
  • Mexican Spanish essentials
  • Spanish Spanish (Castellano)
  • Argentinian & Rioplatense
  • Formal vs. informal (tú/usted/vosotros)
  • Business & professional Spanish
  • Accent & rhythm drills
  • Real conversation practice
  • Graduation — your personal roadmap
What consistency looks like

Meet your teacher

I'm Profe Fer. Let me help you speak.

I've spent the last 40 years teaching English speakers to speak real Spanish — not textbook Spanish, not app Spanish, but the kind that works when you're standing in a market in Oaxaca or at a dinner table with your partner's family.

I've taught executives at Fortune 500 companies. I've taught retirees who thought they were "too old." I've taught grandchildren who wanted to talk to their grandparents in their own language. The one thing they all have in common? They thought they couldn't do it — and in a few weeks, they were having real conversations.

This course is everything I've learned, distilled into 33 modules. No shortcuts. No gimmicks. Just the method that actually works.

Who this is built for

Four reasons people actually finish.

The method is the same for everyone. What changes is your motivation — and how we frame your personal roadmap so it clicks for you. Which one feels like you?

The Traveler

Actually talk in Mexico City.

Not just pointing at menus. Ask for directions, negotiate at markets, chat with your Uber driver about fútbol. The course front-loads travel Spanish so you're useful by week 3.

→ Conversational in 6–8 weeks
Heritage Learner

Talk to your abuela — really talk.

You heard Spanish growing up but never learned it. This is the most emotional reason — and the most powerful. We lean into comprehension and family-context vocabulary.

→ Real conversations in 10 weeks
The Professional

Put Spanish on your résumé.

Speaking Spanish opens doors in bilingual roles. Phase 4 covers business Spanish — meetings, email, presentations, cultural context for Latin American markets.

→ B2 business-level in 14 weeks
The Retiree

You finally have the time.

My oldest student finished the course at 78. "Too old to learn" is a myth — adults actually learn faster than kids in most categories. Let me prove it to you.

→ Fluency with zero rush

"I had a 30-minute conversation with my abuela. In Spanish. She cried."

I grew up hearing Spanish but never learned it. Tried Duolingo for 2 years — nothing. Did Profe Fer's course for 10 weeks. Last Sunday I called my grandmother and we actually talked — not small talk, real talk. She asked me where I'd been hiding this. I had to explain it was Fer.

"Went to Mexico. Didn't use English once. That was the goal."

Previous trip to CDMX I felt like an idiot — just pointing at menus. This time I asked for directions, negotiated at a market, chatted with my Uber driver about fútbol for 20 minutes. The pattern method is legit — once you have the structure, the words come.

"The subjunctive finally makes sense. I don't know how Fer did it."

Three previous teachers tried to explain the subjunctive. All failed. Fer's trigger method took me two weeks to get — and now I use it automatically. The difference is he doesn't teach it as grammar. He teaches it as pattern recognition. Worth the course for that alone.

"Module 18 broke something loose. Everything clicks now."

Been "intermediate" for four years. Couldn't get past it. Two weeks into Fer's subjunctive section and I'm using it in real sentences without thinking. That's the unlock for B2 — nothing else worked.

"At 67 they told me it was too late. Module 28 I proved it wrong."

Retired and promised myself I'd finally learn my husband's native language. Sixteen weeks later I'm having full conversations with his family at Christmas. This method is made for adults. Do not believe the "too old" myth.

"Got a promotion because I closed a deal in Spanish."

Work LATAM sales. Was using an interpreter. Did the course during work hours (boss-approved). 4 months in I ran a whole pitch solo. Easily the best thing I've spent money on this year.

"I quit Duolingo on week 2. No regrets whatsoever."

700-day Duolingo streak. Couldn't order coffee. Started Fer's course — by module 5 I was actually speaking. Deleted the app. The opportunity cost of those 700 days is real. Don't repeat my mistake.

Alex R.
Ex-app-learner · Module 14
★★★★★
"My kids asked why I'm laughing at my laptop. Profe Fer is hilarious."

Didn't expect this — the lessons are actually fun. Fer has real personality, tells stories, makes jokes (some in Spanish that I now get!). Makes the habit easy to keep. My kids are starting too.

Frequently asked

Questions I hear all the time.

If yours isn't here, email me directly — hello@learnspanishwithfer.com.

How long until I can actually speak?
Depends on where you start. Complete beginner: 6–8 weeks to basic conversations. Rusty intermediate: 3–4 weeks to fluid speech. The diagnostic (it's free) tells you exactly what to expect for your starting point.
I've tried apps and failed. Will this work for me?
Probably — because apps fail for a specific reason: they don't make you speak. My course is built around speaking from day 1 and pattern recognition, not vocabulary memorization. If apps didn't work for you, that's actually a good sign this will.
Am I too old to learn?
No. I've taught students in their 70s who became fluent in under a year. The idea that "language learning is for kids" is false — adults learn faster than children in most categories. The only thing that matters is method and consistency.
What if I don't have 30 minutes a day?
You don't need it. Fifteen minutes, 5 days a week is enough to finish in about 4 months. The course is drip-optional — you can binge, or slow down, whatever fits your week.
Monthly or lifetime — which should I pick?
Lifetime if you're serious (pays for itself in under 3 months of monthly). Monthly if you want to test the method first. Upgrade to lifetime anytime — I'll credit what you've paid. No pressure.
Is there live support or 1:1 calls?
Not in this tier — the course is on-demand. Founding members get priority email support from me, and I run monthly community Q&As. For 1:1 coaching, I have a separate program (contact me).
What Spanish do you teach — Mexican, Spanish, Latin American?
I teach neutral Spanish as the foundation (understood everywhere) — then Phase 4 covers the key differences between Mexican, Spanish, and Argentinian/Rioplatense. You'll be comfortable anywhere.
Do I need the workbooks?
Not strictly — but students who do the workbooks finish faster. They're designed to take 10 minutes per module and lock in what you watched. Print them or use digital, your choice.
What's the refund policy?
30 days, full refund, no questions asked. Email me, say "refund," you get your money back. I've had fewer than 1% of students ask — but the option is there, no guilt attached.
Do I need a Spanish-speaking partner or tutor to practice?
No. The course has built-in speaking drills where you respond out loud to prompts. You can supplement with an italki tutor later if you want extra practice, but it's not required to reach fluency.
Can I share my account with my partner or family?
It's one seat per account for progress tracking. That said, anyone watching over your shoulder is welcome — I'd actually encourage it. If you both want your own tracking, monthly is $39.99, cancel anytime.
What platform is it on? Can I use my phone?
Hosted on Whop — works on any device. iOS app, Android app, or any web browser. Progress syncs automatically. Most students watch on their phone during commutes.
Is this affiliated with Spanish certifications (DELE, SIELE)?
Not officially, but the content maps roughly to CEFR A1–B2 progression — many students use it to prep for DELE B1/B2. If certification is your goal, I'll point you to the extra prep materials to pair with.
Can I preview a module before buying?
Yes — the free diagnostic shows you a sample of Module 1. More importantly: the 30-day money-back guarantee means you can watch the first 8 modules and still get a full refund if it's not for you.
Still thinking about it?

The 3 reasons people hesitate.

If any of these are in your head right now — let me address them directly, before you click away.

"I've failed at Spanish before."

That's actually a sign this will work. Apps fail you because they don't teach speaking — that's a method problem, not a you problem. Give the course 30 days; if it's not different, I refund every cent.

"$99.99 feels like a lot."

It's less than 3 months of Netflix. Less than one private tutor session. And it's lifetime — in 3 years it's pennies per month. Monthly ($39.99) is there if you'd rather start smaller.

"I don't have the time."

You have 15 minutes. Everyone has 15 minutes. That's what it takes, 5 days a week. Most students finish in 4 months — some in 8. The course is drip-optional, so you decide the pace.
